New program:
Extremadura on the Spanish side and the Portuguese Alentejo are among the least populated regions of Europe.
The varied landscape in this gently hilly region, along with it´s diverse nature, invites visitors to linger.
Our base is the little village of La Codosera, close to the border with Portugal. We explore the surrounding areas of the village on both sides of the border in comfortable stages. With luck we may have the opportunity to observe vultures and other species of wildlife.

Itinerary:
1st day: Arrival at the guesthouse by 8 p.m., with a rental car recommended for transportation from the airports: Seville (300km), Madrid (400km) or Lisbon (225 km). Collective transfer is only available from Lisbon airport. Dinner and tour briefing upon arrival.

2nd day: After breakfast, we start our first hiking day to "warm up". We leave directly from the Casa Rural and walk through the lightly hilly area, enjoying stunning views over the valleys. We pass old chestnut trees, eucalyptus and olive fields, making our way to the village. Here, we stop at a coffee bar to refresh before heading back to the accommodation, where we have a late cold lunch.

3rd day: Today, the starting point is Finca La Herradura. We hike towards the Portuguese border to El Marco, crossing the smallest international bridge in the world and briefly visiting Portugal. In a little shop, we can find souvenirs and have a "bica" (small coffee). Then we continue on the Spanish side until we reach our rest stop under cork trees. After the rest, we head homeward, crossing a plateau with a great view to the neighboring village of Alburquerque.

4th day: After breakast, we drive to our starting point at the Rio Gevora. The river is a protected area for various animals, such as the kingfisher and water turtles. It emerges on the Portuguese side, meanders around La Codosera, and flows into the Rio Guadiana. We follow along the river and pass old water mills, then walk over sheep meadows and eukalyptus forest back to the river. We have our picnic lunch right next to the river. In the afternoon, we drive a bit further to Alburquerque. We saunter through the mediaval part of town and the impresive castle "La Luna".

5th day: Today, we spend the day in the natural park "Serra de São Marmede". Our hike starts in La Rabaza and we walk through a hilly landscape until we reach a small waterfall, where we rest in this idyllic spot. We then pass through the valley and cross the Cabroeira brook before returning to La Rabaza. In the afternoon, we visit Alegrete, a typical white village in the Alentejo. The hike is around 14km.

6th day: Back on Spanish side today, we drive to Aceña de la Borrega and visit the megalithic dolmens ( 7,6 km, around 2hours ). After the trip, we have lunch in a restaurant there. On the way back, we stop near the castle ruins of Mayorga. We walk up and enjoy the great view (2km, 110 meters in elevation). Vultures nest nearby, and with a bit of luck, we might spot them.

7th day: The week is almost over, and we start our last day in the beautiful nature. We drive to Mosteiros and hike to La Codosera. On our way to the border, we pass pine trees, holm oaks and cork oaks. Close to the border, we reach our picnic spot. After a refreshing break, we are ready for the last part of the walk.. We cross the border and pass through the Sierra Mata Siete until we reach the village.

8th day: Departure after the breakfast, or transfer to the airport. Flights should be sheduled not earlier than 1 p.m.

Please note: Changes may occur due to unforeseen circumstances.
